Hamburg - St. Pauli Bunker
When it comes to green roofs, Hamburg has established itself as a leader among major German and European cities. The city has set the ambitious goal of covering around 70% of all suitable rooftops with vegetation. Hamburg’s green roof policy was first introduced in 2015, when the Ministry of Urban Development and Environment allocated €3.5 million to support the installation of green roofs on both new and renovated buildings. In 2023, the program received an additional €3.5 million, and by the end of 2026, property owners will be able to receive subsidies covering 40% to 60% of construction or renovation costs.
This initiative, together with other sustainable building measures, is designed to help the city adapt to population growth and the challenges of climate change. For both residential and non-residential projects, the Hamburg IFB Bank offers grants of up to €100,000. Funding is available to those who voluntarily install at least 20 m² of green roof with a soil layer of no less than 8 cm in depth.
